Desert is where money stops being an accident. The shop is larger, the SMG is the gun you should still own two islands later, and Standard Lures replace whatever leftover Forest tackle you dragged across the water. Buy the extra slot, buy the SMG, then decide whether you want the grill before the Pufferfish.
The grill is optional for the story and miserable to skip for the economy. A Standard Boss Lure pulls a Blue Shark. Kill it, give the body to the grill master, take the lighter, and light the grill. Cooked catches sell for more; burned ones do not. The 1.5× figure that launch-week writeups repeat is patch-sensitive — watch the multiplier in your own session.
The tourist wants an endangered creature, not “any Desert fish.” Needlefish, Bowlfish, and Seahorse count. He pays you with a carrot. Equip the carrot, catch the Pufferfish, and return the fin. Trees are cover; open sand is a rolling hitbox. Patch 1.0.4 nerfed this boss, so pre-nerf clips are drama, not a plan. Follow the red radar dot to Rocks, and take the Boat Radar with you so you are not steering with a tablet in your hands.
Shop must-buys
- Extra inventory slot first
- SMG and its upgrades — keep this gun after you leave
- Standard Lure for the regular / endangered pool
- Standard Boss Lure for the Blue Shark
- Boat Radar before you leave (hands-free map)
Bait, boss, hand-in
- Regular pool: Standard Lure
- Story / boss bait: Carrot
- Boss: Pufferfish
- Hand-in: Pufferfish fin to Tourist under the tree
- Boat: Boat Radar is the upgrade that stops you from holding the tablet while you steer.
Patch-sensitive notes
- Needlefish, Bowlfish, and Seahorse count as the endangered hand-in for the tourist. Other Standard-Lure fish usually do not.
- Blue Shark → grill master → lighter → grill. Cooking is optional for the story and almost mandatory for money.
- Grill / lava cook multipliers are patch-sensitive. Do not treat 1.5× as a forever number.
